FAQ

Everything you need to know

+ When will all Spanish IBANs be upgraded to Estonian IBANs?

All existing ES IBANs will be upgraded to EE IBANs on the 31st of December.

+ Can I get the new IBAN?

Yes! We offer users who don't want to wait to claim their IBAN and get all the benefits today.

+ Will the new IBAN cost me anything?

No, the upgrade is free, and there are no transaction fees. The same fee schedule applies to both the new and old IBAN.

+ Do I need to do anything?

Yes, you need to claim your new IBAN if you want it today. All existing ES IBANs will be changed to EE IBANs on the 31st of December.

+ What is an ES or EE IBAN prefix?

An IBAN, or international bank account number, is a standard global numbering system developed to identify a bank account. The number starts with a two-digit country code, then two numbers, followed by several more alphanumeric characters.

When talking about a prefix, we refer to the two-digit country code.

Until now, Monerium has used a Spanish payment provider to generate the Monerium IBAN. A Spanish IBAN has the ES prefix. Here is an example of a Spanish IBAN:

ES7768490001560005778133

Our new Estonian payment provider, LHV Bank, has the EE prefix. Here is an example of how your new IBAN could look like:

EE207777000134488803

+ What will happen to my old ES IBAN?

All existing ES IBANs will be changed to EE IBANs . Your new EE IBAN will replace your old ES IBAN. Nothing else will change. The IBAN will still be connected to the same wallet.

+ What will happen if a payment is made to the old ES IBAN after I upgrade to the new EE IBAN?

Any payments directed to your former ES IBAN won't go lost. We're keeping a vigilant eye on transactions to this address for the foreseeable future, ensuring they're processed seamlessly. However, once we phase out the ES IBAN, incoming payments will bounce back to the sender, prompting them to use your updated EE IBAN.

+ Why are you changing the IBAN prefix from ES to EE?

It is essential to Monerium that our community has the best experience possible when transferring fiat on and off-chain.

Estonian IBANs, with their EE prefix, stand out as the gold standard in banking. Their integration with advanced tech infrastructure, robust regulatory compliance, and rapid adaptability to financial innovations make them a top choice for businesses and individuals seeking superior banking experiences.

Monerium is proud to join forces with LHV Bank, a frontrunner in payment innovations. Our collaboration introduces the new EE IBAN, uniquely equipped to seamlessly support both SEPA Instant and SEPA Standard. With this integration, every payment takes the fastest and most efficient path.

+ What is SEPA?

SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) – a transfer standard used within the European Union and a few more countries that aren't part of it. In this area, transfers in euros are done in the same conditions within the country and outside – to another country that is a member of SEPA. At the moment (2023) – SEPA consists of 36 European countries (27 EU + 3 European Economic Area (EEA) countries – Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein + 6 non-EEA countries – The United Kingdom, Switzerland, Vatican City, Monaco, San Marino, and Andorra). In this list are also territories that belong to the listed countries.

+ What are SEPA instant payments?

SEPA Instant, also called SEPA Instant Credit Transfers or SCT Inst, are instant transfers in euros executed 24/7/365 and reach the recipient within seconds.

+ Who can send and receive SEPA instant payments?

The counterpart banks must support the SEPA Instant scheme to execute a SEPA Instant payment.

Your new Monerium IBAN supports both SEPA Instant and Standard. It will always try to execute the payment with SEPA instant and fall back to SEPA Standard in cases where the counterpart bank does not support SEPA instant.

+ Are all payments instant?

All payments not exceeding € 100,000 are transferred over the SEPA Instant payment network as long as the counterpart bank supports it.

All other payments will automatically fall back to SEPA standard.

All incoming payments are automatically processed and minted to the owner's wallet 24/7.

Outgoing payments are processed during Monerium office hours, 09:00 - 16:00 UTC+0 on business days, for security reasons. We are working hard on a solution to automate outgoing payments.

+ What is the difference between SEPA Standard and Instant?

SEPA Standard payment takes up to one business day to complete and can handle any amount.

SEPA Instant payment is processed 24/7 and completed in seconds. The maximum amount you can send for each transaction is €100.000.

+ Has there been any changes in the way my funds are protected?

No, Monerium safeguards user funds in the same way as before. Each EURe issued is 102% backed and safeguarded in the most secure way possible and in line with rules and regulations for Electronic Money Institutions. You can read more about how Monerium safeguards users funds here.
